What to look for in lift chairs

  • Fit matters most: your feet should rest flat on the floor and your back reach the backrest. Many chairs come in petite, medium and large sizes.
  • 2-position, 3-position or dual-motor? Dual-motor chairs move the back and footrest separately and can recline further.
  • Check the weight capacity and seat width; heavy-duty models go to 500–600 lbs.
  • Wall clearance: leave room behind the chair for it to recline.
  • Medicare may cover only the lift mechanism with a prescription, not the chair itself.
